The focus of research in the field of dental biomaterials science is primarily on studying the mechanical durability of ceramics, metals, polymers and hybrid materials. Such materials are commonly used for tooth- or implant-borne reconstructions. For this purpose, materials are initially tested employing standard test methods and then they are exposed to simulated clinical conditions.
The other line of research deals with adhesion of resin-based materials to dental tissues and diverse restorative materials. Here, the goals are to improve adhesion to different substrates and to better simulate the clinical conditions.
