Vera Colombo has been focusing her research on biomechanics applied to the orofacial area and the monitoring of patients with orofacial pain. Her main research projects investigate the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) as a mechanical unit to understand the role of biomechanical factors in the development of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). In particular, she studies the influence of TMJ anatomy and kinematics on dynamic joint loading during functional movements using computational models and in vitro testing of living soft tissues. Furthermore, she is involved in the development of innovative methods for the assessment of masticatory muscle activity and other relevant biosignals under laboratory conditions as well as in field measurements, for the monitoring of TMD patients.
